Requirement:

Establish a comprehensive OH service for the organisation, one of the UK’s largest packaging companies, replacing an existing model which saw occupational health being accessed on a local basis through a number of providers.

Our solution:

Health Management developed and implemented a business plan in conjunction with the organisation’s HR team. OHP-led site visits were carried out to establish risk categories for groups of employees and a ‘Comparably Exposed Worker Group’ matrix was based which forms the cornerstone of the health surveillance programme for the organisation, as below.

A team of full, part time and peripatetic OHAs was recruited to deliver a health surveillance and wellbeing (health screening) programme for employees at a number of sites in the UK, plus their mobile engineers who are effectively home workers.

Our approach:

Health Management held briefing sessions for the organisation’s HR team and line managers around the country to successfully establish the new service at its earliest implementation stage.

We developed a customised health questionnaire for prospective new night or evening employees in order to assess their fitness for work.

To ensure consistency in medical advice being given, irrespective of location, Health Management’s head office clinical team manages and advises on all medical issues.

The bespoke health surveillance database created by Health Management is used and accessed on-site by the team of OHAs and OHPs supporting the contract. As with the health questionnaire, any medical issues arising from the health surveillance programme are reviewed by our head office clinical team and further investigations carried out as required.

Customised software has also been developed to support the screening programme. This enables the OHA team to provide personalised handouts to employees giving valuable information concerning their health and lifestyle.

Once the new service had been successfully introduced, Health Management added the following services:

  • National provision of Mobile Health Units
  • The organisation’s locations in Eire were incorporated
  • We encouraged the OHA team to liaise with the parent company to look at ways in which the UK service could be developed and ideas shared
  • Access to a counselling service was introduced on a call down basis
  • Introduced an OH section on the company intranet containing details on how to access the service, introductions to the staff delivering the service, together with general information on health and related wellbeing topics such as healthy eating
