Corporate Responsibility
Corporate Responsibility to Health Management is more than ensuring legal compliance, we recognise that our operations have an impact on the local, regional and potentially global environment and as a consequence we are committed to integrating sustainability into every aspect of our internal operations, as well as the way we work with our customers, suppliers and business partners. Our objective is to minimise our negative impact and promote sustainability through proactive planning, policy and decision making activities.
Our policy is to minimise any adverse environmental and social effects caused as a result of our activities or service delivery and actively encourage all employees, customers, business partners and suppliers to take responsibility for sustainability.
Health Management are committed to becoming a truly sustainable business by minimising our carbon footprint, environmental impact and creating positive effects on the environment and social structure within which we operate. We have embraced the 10 principles set out in the UN Global Compact of human rights, labour, environment and anti-corruption.
These principles will be regularly reviewed by the Directors of Health Management to ensure that the business meets and exceeds its environmental and social obligations both within the local community and all other locations from which we operate.
The responsibility for sustainability lies with Health Management as a growing organisation, all its employees, business partners and its suppliers. We also actively encourage our customers to consider the impact on the environment and society as a whole in any interactions they have with HML.
Health Management's commitment is defined by key measurable tasks;
Promote environmental management policies and practices at every level within the organisation
- Procurement can make a contribution to our objectives for sustainability and corporate responsibility and therefore we have purchasing standards with all our suppliers.
- Promote a purchasing policy which will give preference, as far as is practicable, to those products and services which cause least harm to the environment. HML also actively encourage and work with suppliers who adapt their policies and procedures to be more carbon neutral, environmentally and socially sustainable.
- Only work with suppliers and business partners who subscribe to the UN Global Compact principles and are compliant with all legislation regarding human rights, forced and compulsory labour, freedom of association, working time, minimum wage, child labour, equality and diversity regulations, as well as holding exemplary records for safe and healthy workplaces and anticorruption measures.
- Encourage customers to consider the implications of wasteful processes and procedures when dealing with us, for example encouraging them to send electronic information rather than faxes where two paper copies are then held on file.
Eliminating unnecessary use of energy and wherever possible all forms of pollution
- Measure our carbon footprint/greenhouse gas emissions and environmental impact. Aiming to reduce the outputs year on year, when business growth has been taken into account.
- Introduce the tree planting programme and ensure it reflects the off setting of CO2 that we cannot reduce, to enable us to actively manage our emissions (based on 1 tree per 1000 KWs of energy used and 1 tree per 2000 miles of business travel).
- Develop new ways of working that minimise our environmental impact, including IT on line solutions and new protocols.
- Reduce the need for movement of people and goods by road by encouraging and supporting the use of public transport, car sharing initiatives, walking and cycling as alternatives to the use of private motor vehicles.
- Encouraging telephone based conference calls rather than face to face meetings, when appropriate.
- Ensure all computers, printers, lights and other equipment is turned off or powered down when not in use.
- Ensure phone chargers are only turned on when actually charging, rather than continually being left on.
- Avoid wherever practical the use of environmentally damaging substances.
Avoid waste and encourage recycling of goods and products wherever possible
- Encourage and promote waste reduction and recycling through educational programmes for all employees.
- Recycle all paper in the 'shred it' bins provided, Actively encourage double sided printing, if printing is essential.
- Recycle of all plastic cups in the recycle bins provided. Alternatively use glass cups or wash out the plastic cups and re-use.
- Where waste must be disposed of, ensuring it is disposed of legally and appropriately with minimal waste going to landfill, wherever possible.
- Reduce water consumption.
- Encouraging our suppliers, business partners and customers to avoid waste when working with us, for example encourage the use of electronic formats wherever possible or buying products which has minimal or biodegradable packaging and are local to use to minimise mileage when deliveries are required.
Proactive social responsibility
- Ensure our recruitment, training, development, flexible working and reasonable adjustment policies are as inclusive as possible to actively encourage social inclusion.
- Wherever possible buy 'fair trade' products, ethically sourced or those from sustainable resources.
- Wherever possible work with suppliers that are local, SMEs and/or minority owned.
- Use a water supplier who works closely with 'Water Aid' ,a charity working in developing countries to provide clean water to local communities.

- HML have established a charity and communities day where each employee may volunteer to spend a day with a nominated charity or community project.
Monitoring and measuring
- We will monitor our measurable objectives on an annual basis, taking relevant action, if required, to address any discrepancies.
- We will monitor our suppliers and business partners at contract commencement and contract renewal to ensure the purchasing and partnership standards are met and maintained.
- We will work in partnership with our employees, suppliers, business partners and customers to continually improve our standards, objectives and protocols.
